New Report Reveals the Top 10 Canadian Universities for 2025

The Times Higher Education (THE) 2025 World Universities Ranking report has released a list of a total of 33 Canadian universities. The University of Toronto has enjoyed a top spot since 2011, and the second spot was taken by the University of British Columbia.

McGill University secured the third position due to its world-class facility and infrastructure. The rankings have been according to factors such as teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook, and industry.

National Rank of the Universities

On February 18, THE released the 2025 World University Rankings, showcasing the global standing of Canadian universities. The report assessed over 2,000 universities from 115 countries and territories, with 33 Canadian institutions making the list. The list of the universities according to National rank is given below:

Global Ranking of the Universities

Among these, the top 10 Canadian universities for 2025 are all located in Canada’s four most popular provinces for newcomers who wish to study in Canada. Three Canadian universities ranked in the global top 100, with the University of Toronto securing its position as the top university in Canada.

Eight other Canadian universities placed in the global top 200, continuing the trends seen in the 2024 rankings. McMaster University and the University of Alberta received perfect scores for industry impact (100). The list of top universities according to the Global Ranking is as follows:

Methodology

The Canadian universities featured in the Times Higher Education 2025 World University Rankings report were judged by 18 performance indicators. It was combined into five categories reflecting the core missions of leading global institutions. The five parameters for judging the universities are as follows:

  • Teaching
  • Research quality
  • Research environment
  • International outlook
  • Industry

Comparison with the 2024 Rankings

When compared to the 2024 rankings, the national rankings of Canadian universities show little change. McMaster University and the University of Alberta are now tied for fourth place, while the University of Calgary and Western University are now tied for ninth.

Overall, the top 10 universities experienced a slight decline in scores from 2024 to 2025, except for McGill University, which saw a modest improvement. McGill is the only university that advanced in the global rankings, while others either maintained or dropped in position.

How to Apply for a Study Permit?

To be eligible for a Canada study permit, you must have the following:

  • Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • Obtain a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province or territory
  • Have sufficient financial resources to cover your first-year tuition fees, living expenses, and round-trip travel costs to your home country
  • You must also not be criminally or medically inadmissible to Canada
  • Be able to show that you intend to return to Canada once your study permit expires.
