The Immigration Minister of Canada has at last approved the request by the Manitoba government to extend temporary resident status for candidates under its Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
Work permits of almost every candidate in Canada are about to expire in 2024, mostly Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders. Currently, they are in the pool under Manitoba PNP’s Skilled Worker Program. This program is tailored to hire candidates for in-demand occupations in the province.
As per the newly approved request, 6,700 temporary workers will continue working in Manitoba while their PNP applications will be processed by the provincial government. Eligible foreign workers will get an official nomination from Manitoba to become permanent residents. Candidates can expect a nomination in the next two years.
Along with this, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will collaborate with other provinces to bring more temporary residents to Canada - who are eligible to apply for Canada PR visa. This initiative aims to support the country's labour market requirements.
More information regarding this will be shared after the scheduled meeting of the Federation of Ministers Responsible for Immigration (FMRI) on May 10.
The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program was designed back in 1998, to attract new immigrants who would otherwise immigrate to urban centres. After the massive success of the MPNP, all provinces and territories in Canada launched their own provincial nominee programs.
As per reports from 2023, more than 10,000 individuals in Manitoba changed their work permit status to Canada PR. Further, between January and March of this year, Manitoba issued 1,560 invitations through the MPNP.
