Canada to Send Invitations for Parents and Grandparents PR Pathway in 2025

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is set to invite eligible sponsors to apply for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2025. The Canadian government announced on March 7, 2025, that it will issue Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to selected sponsors next year.

Revival of the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program

In January 2025, IRCC had stated that no new invitations would be issued under the PGP for the year, focusing only on processing applications from the 2024 intake. However, the latest update brings fresh hope to sponsors who submitted their interest to sponsor forms back in 2020.

While the government has not disclosed the exact date for issuing ITAs, more details are expected in the coming months. IRCC will continue using a lottery system to randomly select potential sponsors from the 2020 pool, as the intake for new applicants has not yet reopened.

An Overview of the Parents and Grandparents Program

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is a vital pathway that allows Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada as permanent residents.

In order to be eligible, sponsors must meet the minimum income requirement and fulfill other criteria that PGP requires. Meanwhile, the sponsored relatives must be admissible to Canada under the immigration regulations.

The application process follows a two-step approach:

  • Potential sponsors submit an interest to sponsor form
  • Selected applicants receive an invitation to apply and must complete the full application process within the given timeframe.

Since the 2020 intake, IRCC has been selecting applicants from that pool, and no new intake has been announced. The continuation of this system means that individuals who have been waiting for years may finally receive their invitation in 2025.

Key Features of Super Visa Program

People who are unable to sponsor their parents and grandparents through the PGP, the Super Visa remains a viable option. The Super Visa program allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada for extended visits. The key features of the Super Visa include:

  • Multiple entries for up to 10 years
  • Ability to stay in Canada for up to five years at a time, with an option to extend for two additional years
  • A requirement for sponsors to meet minimum income criteria
  • Mandatory third-party health insurance for visitors to cover their stay.

Recent updates to the Super Visa program have introduced more flexible health insurance options, making it easier for applicants to meet requirements.

Conclusion

The Canadian government is expected to provide further details on the PGP invitations in the coming months. Meanwhile, those interested in bringing their parents and grandparents to Canada should explore the Super Visa program as an alternative pathway.
