Canada Aims to Reduce Fraud in Express Entry System

The Government of Canada is committed to maintaining the integrity of its immigration system while continuing to attract skilled individuals who contribute to the country's economic success. To combat fraud and ensure fairness, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of IRCC, has announced a significant change to the Express Entry system. Express Entry candidates will no longer receive additional points for having a job offer from spring 2025.

This temporary measure aims to discourage fraud activities, particularly the illegal buying and selling of Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs), which some candidates have used to boost their chances of being selected for permanent residency. By removing the additional points for job offers, the government seeks to eliminate this incentive, thereby strengthening the system's integrity.

Who will it Affect?

The upcoming changes will affect individuals seeking permanent residency through the Express Entry system, including those already working in Canada temporarily. However, candidates who have already received invitations to apply or have applications in progress will not be impacted. Once implemented, the policy will apply to all candidates in the Express Entry pool with job offers and new entrants to the pool.

Importance of this Change

Minister Marc Miller highlighted the importance of this move, stating, “We are taking important steps to reduce fraud while continuing to attract the skilled talent our economy needs. Immigration has always been a cornerstone of Canada’s success, and we remain committed to welcoming the best and brightest to Canada so that everyone has access to the quality jobs, homes, and supports they need to thrive.”

Canadian immigration system would ensure that it has the skilled workforce needed to sustain key industries. The Express Entry system, which manages applications for programs such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class plays a critical role in this process. These changes reflect the government's commitment to a responsive, well-managed, and fair immigration framework.

Conclusion

In recent years, Canada has made significant updates to its immigration policies. For instance, in June 2022, amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act enabled the government to select immigrants based on attributes that align with economic priorities. These changes underline Canada's focus on attracting talent that meets the country’s evolving economic needs.

The decision to eliminate additional points for job offers in the Express Entry system aligns with Canada’s broader efforts to uphold the fairness and credibility of its immigration processes. By addressing potential vulnerabilities in the system, the government ensures that Canadian immigration continues to benefit both newcomers and the country as a whole.
